Lithium-ion battery recycling

A new and exclusive five-year recycling agreement has been set up between Livium Ltd and ZECO Energy Pty Ltd. The purpose of this will be to make it possible to handle the recycling of lithium-ion batteries from ZECO’s network.

The deal states that Envirostream Australia Pty Ltd, Livium’s wholly owned subsidiary, will be in charge of handling end-of-life residential and commercial energy storage system (ESS) battery packs. These battery packs will be provided by ZECO Energy.

ZECO is a provider of sustainable energy solutions for both residential and commercial markets and this newly-formed agreement began on the 19th of February 2025. At the moment it is planned that this agreement will run for an initial five-year term and there will be an optional three-year extension provided.

Throughout the partnership, Livium will be responsible for processing fees for sorting and recycling ZECO’s batteries, plus any additional revenue gathered from other services. These services could be battery dismantling, or discharging or even transport.

At the moment ZECO Energy serves over 40,000 active customers, which includes supplying battery systems to companies such as Tesla and Samsung SDI. Therefore, this new agreement highlights the company’s focus on managing batteries in a responsible manner, whilst also ensuring and maintaining a recycling process which is both sustainable and structured.

On the other hand, when it comes to Livium, the agreement emphasises the company’s strategy to both secure exclusive battery recycling contracts, whilst also focusing on diversifying its supply sources.

It is clear that this excellent and forward-thinking agreement benefits both companies and also supports Livium’s existing battery recycling agreements. It is also evident that this agreement will play a role in helping the company achieve long-term growth within the circular economy.

Livium CEO and managing director, Simon Linge, commented, “By collaborating with ZECO Energy, we are reinforcing our commitment to a circular economy for energy storage. This partnership ensures that end-of-life batteries are repurposed responsibly, supporting both environmental and industry sustainability. Building out the network of sources of end-of-life batteries gives us the confidence to scale our recycling business which will allow us to service more markets. We thank ZECO Energy for their partnership and confidence in our capabilities to enter into this five-year contract. We look forward to working with them closely.”

ZECO Energy director, Jag Makam, mentioned, “ZECO Energy is all about sustainability and responsible product cycle management. Teaming up with Livium takes that to the next level. By partnering with a top player in battery recycling, we are making sure our energy management solutions are handled responsibly from start to finish. This collaboration doesn’t just show our commitment, it raises the bar for energy solutions in Australia. Bonus – Livium has its team and facilities right here in Melbourne!”
